| BEHIND THE COVER |
| Daily Bread was my first album cover that didn’t feature a photograph of me. In fact, it didn’t even feature a photograph. Instead, it features a Celtic cross on a purple/lavender background with the words “Give us this day” written subtly in the background. The artwork was done by Sara Faber, a friend of mine from college. She is without a doubt one of the most talented and creative people I have ever met. Ever since I’ve known her, she’s been designing her own greeting cards. All of her friends (including myself) couldn’t wait for Christmas, Valentine’s Day or our birthdays, just so we could get our very own “Sara Faber” original greeting card. Each one I get is better than the last. They’re just so awesome. And perfect. I’m trying to convince her to start selling them on the Internet. I want to be her business manager and one day run a store for her. But I digress… I approached Sarah during the summer between our sophomore and junior years at Marquette, during which time I was doing the recordings for Daily Bread and One Step Forward. I asked if she would be interested in designing a cover for my first liturgical album, and she was happy to. I gave her some ideas…basically saying that I wanted there to be a cross. In fact, that’s the only thing I said. The rest was up to her. A couple of weeks after I asked her to help me out, she e-mailed me some proofs. My jaw dropped. To cover her bases, she sent a couple of different designs with a host of different color schemes. I instantly liked the purple one the best. She made the design by cutting out actual pieces of construction paper – many different colors – and putting them into a cut-out Celtic cross. When she was done, she placed the cross on a purple background and hand-wrote the words “Give us this day” (to coincide with the part of the Lord’s Prayer that the words “Daily bread” come from). I didn’t ask her to do that. She just did. And I loved it. She also hand-wrote the words to each song title on the back of the CD. So that’s how Daily Bread’s cover design came to be. It’s an original “Sara Faber” creation. I’m incredibly proud to tell people who designed it. And I’m honored to be able to look at one of my album covers and see one of her designs (actually, I now have two albums with her designs…but the story of the Be With Me cover will come at a later time). I know as the years go on (and as the albums keep coming), I’ll call upon Sara’s talents again. |
